Above is a 940px image inserted directly into the post. It is also set as the post thumbnail.
An optional custom field called columns was set with a value of 1 to make this post a single column. Two more custom fields, hide_title and hide_meta were also set to “yes” to hide the post title and meta data under the title since this is a portfolio item and I wanted the content high on the page.
As you can see, this allows you to have a pretty wide-open page, adding video, images or whatever you like.

An eerie echo bounces off the empty blog walls as I say hello to no audience in front of me.
Today I’m starting a journey long due. A journey to find out what good design is. What composition really is, why it matters and how it is made. To learn the principles of design; to discover how colors work… to get inspired, to create and to make mistakes.

While that’s nice and well you might say; why the heck you need another useless blog clogging up my tubes for that. Don’t worry, I ask the same question myself… the answer is that I can’t find another place in my life to express that.

Right now I am studying graphic design in a community college. And to put it plainly it’s crap. The associates degree to which I am currently aspiring is so shallow I can’t even call it an appetizer. It is barely an appetizer sampler. Most courses teach how to operate machinery and software while giving no purpose for those buttons and designs.
I must say that there are shining stars, teachers who fight against mediocrity; most often to no gain to themselves.

What I learned from great teachers, my father being one of them is that good design is not easy. And the path of learning is scattered in mistakes. I remember the beginning of learning composition was just being pointed out my mistakes. Over… and over again. until I began seeing those mistakes before I made them. I meet a lot of people who fail and say they are not good enough; change their major; drop their passion and exchange it for nursing or accounting degrees. I say as long as I keep making mistakes, I know that I am learning.

I leave you with quotes of people who twirl their thoughts into words much better than me:

BigWords from D-sign on Vimeo. Envato is a great place to learn & read about design, video editing, coding and sell, buy flash apps, add-ons, themes and other digital snippets you’ve made. It’s like stock photos idea for all digital media. I’ve been using the activeden site for flash from their marketplace most. And wow did they grow fast. Even though this video is just a nice ad, the quotes and their passion to design is quite inspiring.
